History & culture guide

The Welsh borders have seen many of the famous and infamous episodes of British history. These have left a legacy of castles, churches and other historical sites across the local area:

Why not combine a little walking and some history? Trevyr Barn is a stone’s throw from Offa’s Dyke and in the middle of the 32 km Three Castles walk (Grosmont, White Castle and Skenfrith) which, for the fit, can be completed in a long summer’s day. There are plenty of shorter variations, and we will be happy to help you plan.

In Grosmont, St Nicolas Church, with its large medieval nave, was built in the 13th Century as part of the supporting infrastructure for Grosmont Castle. There are plenty of other interesting churches nearby, and among the best are: Cwmyoy, Partrishow, Kilpeck and Abbey Dore.

The Village Alive Trust is a local charity which works to preserve our local heritage and history. It has restored some fascinating buildings and has created some short trails to help you explore. Check out their website here.

The Hay Literary Festival and the Brecon Festival of Jazz are internationally renowned cultural events. Throughout the year, there are plenty of local festivals to suit all interests , which celebrate the culture and heritage of Monmouthshire. Check here for some ideas.
